A Community Outreach orthopedic Project was held at St. Teresa Mission Hospital in Meru County. The Project was Coordinated by Dr. Gakuya, A lecturer and Orthopedic Surgeon at the orthopedic Department of the University of Nairobi. The project ran from 30th September 2013 to 3rd October 2013. Members of staff who joined the Project included Dr. R.O. Ombachi and Dr. J.C. Mwangi. Four Registrars formed the rest of the team.

Trauma, Hand and Reconstructive Surgery

1. All aspects of musculoskeletal trauma management and care including.:

  1. Pelvic Trauma – Stabilization of the pelvis, ext. or int. fixation. Management of acetabular fractures, Sacroiliac dislocations and sacral fractures.
  2. Vascular Trauma – Identification of limb arterial injuries.
  3. Wound Management – Flaps, rotational or free. (Rotate to Plastic Surgery Dept.)
  4. Hand Trauma – Management of hand injuries, fractures and the mangled hand.
  5. Ilizarov Procedures – For salvaging limbs, bone transport & lengthening,
  6. correction of deformities and fixation of fractures

A Spine Project was held at the Kenyatta National Hospital with the support of Nuvasive and coordinated by Dr. Ombachi B, an orthopedic Surgeon and  lecturer at the Orthopedic Department of the University of Nairobi. Numerous complex cases were performed and registrars were able to scrub in and learn.
